Pink balloons. Heart-shaped boxes full of chocolates. A dozen roses. Or two dozen.
We don’t care about any of that. Not this year.
We want tissues, tears and heartbreak. Tell us about your worst Valentine’s Day ever, and win with Pinehurst!
Leave a comment here or on our Facebook page telling us in 150 words or less about the worst Valentine’s Day experience of your life.
An esteemed panel of heartless, jaded, unfeeling and lovelorn judges will determine the best of the worst, with the winner receiving the choice of a Couples Massage at The Spa at Pinehurst or dinner for two at one of our fine restaurants.
Entries will be accepted until Tuesday, Feb. 12, and we’ll reveal the winner on Valentine’s Day.
After all, something good has to happen on that day, right?
Love,

My sophomore year in college we had a party, and I had a crush on a guy in our dorm quad. my friend set me up on a blind date with the guy I thought was the cutest guy on campus, and he agreed to come to the party and be my date. I was so excited as it was my first date ever! He came, said hello, and for the rest of the evening, he paid no attention to me. I was devastated to say the least
My worst Valentine’s Day had to be last year. I had just finished 6 weeks of radiation therapy which was everyday…4 days prior to Feb14th.. My mouth was so burnt and I still wasn’t able to eat anything. To top it off all I could do was drink Ensure…which I couldn’t even taste.
Went to surprise my “girlfriend” at her college 3 hrs away on V-Day. It was a Tursday so I had to skip class and borrow a mutual friend’s condo and kitchen to cook big surprise meal. My “girlfriend” shows up and I surprise her and I notice a look of terror in her eyes then and throughout the next hour when she ate the meal I had prepared (accompanied by candlelight and flowers). She gave a terrible excuse that she had to leave for an “hour or so” and would be right back. At 1am she comes in from what I found out later was a Valentines date with her real boyfriend. To top it off, she gave an interview to the school paper basically making fun of me for trying. She went to an SEC school. 40k+ students shared in my embarrassment. Mortifying.

Some women love diamonds and some women love pearls. Me I love chocolate. I love chocolate filled with coconut and I love chocolate filled with jelly. I love chocolate filled with anything but nuts.
Every Valentine’s Day my family sends me the biggest valentine they can find. Last year, as every year before, the anticipation of the huge valentine I knew I would receive made my knees go weak. All I could think about was the decadent little treats inside of it.
When Valentine’s Day finally came I cut my day short at work to get home and dive into the big red heart.
Walking through the door and into the living room I gasped. Their sat my now ex-husband surrounded by gold foil wrappers and chocolate all over his face. The only candies left were the candies filled with nuts. Needless to say we divorced soon after.
About twenty years ago my girl friend now my wife was singing at a wedding at the same time I was taking pictures at a different wedding. That night she called me to come pick her up at the police station as someone had hit and totaled her car. While I was waiting for the light to change in front of the police station another car slammed into me and totaled my car. So there we both were sitting at the police station in Hoboken wondering who to call to come get us at 2 am in the morning. Treasured moments.
Valentine’s Day 1991 – my husband was deployed in the front lines in the 1st Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) with XVIII Airborne Corps. Was getting my picture taken in January to send to him when we heard the news on the radio that the air bombing had started. Knew the ground war had to begin after that, so I was agony until I heard from him again (which was well after the ground war started). And this was before Skype, smart phones, he didn’t even have Internet Access, etc. so the only contact we had was good old snail mail. It was a rough Valentine’s Day.
My ex-husband and I tried every method to stay together (including counseling) We decided to try separation. During this time, he took a trip to Vegas with some friends and was supposed to return on Valentines day so that we could have a romantic dinner and try to kindle our relationship. He ended up missing his flight and didn’t come home for Valentines. I found out 2 weeks later that the reason he missed his flight was because he was having a “relationship” with another girl while in Vegas. This is part of the reason we are now divorced and most of the reason I hate Valentines day. Couple years later, I wrote a long blog on why Valentines Day is overrated. And, ever since my divorce, I only celebrate Valentines Day with those that are close to my heart….. my children!
My husband is an Army Officer so we haven’t been able to share many Valentines together as he is deployed often. Last year was only our second opportunity in 6 years so we decided to make the most of it and cram in lots of festivities for lost time! He had a scheduled airborne jump that day and was to be home after. Prior to expecting him home, I received a call from his cell- “I broke my leg, come soon!”. That was all he said as his phone died. His phone remained dead as I panicked, jumped in the car, and headed to base trying to track down where he was being taken. The 14th and many sleepless hours the next day were spent in the emergency room and surgical suite at the lovely Womack hospital. I dined alone on hospital food that Valentine’s day. We went home to months of rehabilitation a day or so after that special 14th with a very rememberable Valentines day gift- a metal plate and 6 screws! Who needs roses?!

My worst Valentines Day was in 1990. My 9 year old son had his first chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with cancer 2 days earlier at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital in Memphis, Tn on his birthday. The chemo lasted 14 hours and it was heart wrenching watching my baby suffer. My son later had his shoulder, arm and part of his torso amputated. My younger children were left at home and could not be with me. These were very hard days.
My wife and I have been together for 24 years. For the first twelve, one of us would be sick on 2/14. Romantic trips to quiet inns, nice dinners at fancy restaurants, flights to tropical islands, golf trips were all cancelled and countless bottles of bubbly went undrunk because of this. We now celebrate Valentines two weeks early.
My worst Valentine’s Day ever??? I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a junior in high school. My boyfriend of 4 years gave me a beautiful, romantic card with another girls name on it! He also gave the other girl a card with my name on it! Oops! Of course, that was our last Valentine’s Day together! 💔
My worst valentine’s day was every year married to my first husband. He never got me a card, flowers, candy! NADA! He was mean and even in counseling told the counselor that if I wanted a present to look at my diamond ring (which was his first wife’s I found out later). He finally decided to be violent towards me and the marriage ended in divorce. I am now with a wonderful, caring man who I am proud to calls husband. Not having gifts for all those years left me empty, but now my heart is filled. We can’t afford much with bringing up three kids between both of out past marriages….but at least I have real love. And Valentines Day is everyday when you have that.
On Valentines Day 2010, I walked in on my husband, who was supposed to be the love of my life, with another man. Yep you read that right. I was destroyed. I left and had a nervous break down. Later i found out he had been cheating on me with various people through out our marriage.
Last year we had dinner at my mother-in-laws….thats it.
This time last year, my Valentine was slowly dying of pancreatic cancer…Passed on leap day…nuff said )-:
The worst Valentine’s Day I had would have to be in 2002. My boyfriend at the time was deployed to Afghanistan. He didn’t send me anything for Valentine’s Day and I sent him a whole bunch of stuff because his Birthday was also on the 10th of February. Anyhow, not only did I not get anything from him, but I went out with a group of friends and had the worst time. One of which was a guy that was really into me. Turns out that he thought I was his Valentine. Hahaha! So, when he and our other friend walked me to my car. He attempted to kiss me. He told me I was his Valentine. Of course, I didn’t kiss him back. Plus,I told him he definitely wasn’t my Valentine. But, that had to have been my worst one ever. Oh and the guy that thought I was his Valentine that Valentine’s Day is now my husband and he is in love with the gem of golf! This would make up for that kiss I didn’t give him then!
We were driving on vacation and it was Feb 14 which happens to be our anniversary. It was early evening and we were heading south in Florida to the Keys. Well we stopped to get a room for the night and none were available. No matter where we tried there wasn’t a room anywhere and we were almost to the Everglades and it was now in the early AM hours. So, on our anniversary night we spent it parked next to big rig trucks in a rest stop in a Volkswagen rabbit.
This year will be the worst Valentines day ever if I do not win this…
but I it would have to be this years (I know it hasnt happened yet) but this is my 1st and very last valentine’s engaged. My future husband has always planned such wonderful dates. One year we went and saw Gone With The Wind on the big screen(my favorite movie) and he got me 12 balloons all filled with 12 reasons why he loved me. Last year we got a hotel in Raleigh (we live in chapel hill) and when i got to the hotel he had chocolate covered strawberries, roses, and champagne waiting for us… we food and bar hopped all over the city (first time i ever got to explore the city). It was magical
But this year since we are paying for our wedding we have to make some cuts and Valentine’s day is one of them. He has been working doubles at work just so we can afford our dream wedding and to stay out of debit. He is my rock and Since he as been working so hard for us I would love to treat him to something wonderful… and this sounds perfect for him… even though he is working a double this year on Valentine’s day… doesnt mean we can make it up with this awesome trip.
After dating a very beautiful, talented, and intelligent girl Valentines day became the end of a painful quest to convince our relationship to continue. We met at her place to celebrate Valentines. Although we connected on many levels we did not agree on religion and despite desperate late nights in deep conversation to change each other, plus many personal concessions we ended a two-year commitment. We exchanged gifts and I left giving her a locket engraved “if only we had a nonjudgemental eternity.”
It killed us both, but she drove away that night with a man whose belief she shared. I followed behind in the car for awhile but it was like she was slipping away forever and did. I watched the car drive into the distance and that is the last I ever saw her.
My worst Valentine’s Day ever happened while in college. During college, I volunteered at a local Fire Department. I had made reservations at an extravagant steakhouse for my girlfriend (now fiance’) and I. The evening was well planned. Early that day, I had just picked up a bouquet of flowers and was running other errands when we were dispatched to a very large woods fire (Several hundred acres). Without hesitation, I responded. Surely, we could have it contained in a few hours I rationalized with myself. After about 8 hours of digging hand lines with the State Forestry Department, I realized I should probably call my girlfriend and break the news. Unfortunately, in the rush to the station, I had left my cellphone in my personal vehicle. It was almost 3 entire days before I returned from the fire. Needless to say, I have yet to live that one down!

So….who won???
We have a winner.
Congrats to Ken Justice for winning Pinehurst’s Best Worst Valentine’s Day Contest. Ken chose the Couples Massage at The Spa at Pinehurst as his prize.
Here’s Ken’s entry, which came to us via Facebook:
“It was 1995. I was living in the Village at the time. I took my girlfriend to dinner at the Pinecrest – then had drinks and songs afterwards in the bar. I went to the bathroom, came back, she was gone. I walked the Village looking for her, and then wandered in the basement bar at the Coves. Friends saw her leave with another guy. I found them making out in a car on corner of Spur and Dundee. I moved to Philly a month later. She married the guy and has 3 kids. I have a dog. Happy Valentine’s Day!”
